Why Hire Me for Your Home and Radon Testing?

Why Hire Me?

Thank you for considering me for your home inspection and radon measurement. Why hire me for your home inspection and radon measurement? You’ll get a skilled and knowledgeable home inspector looking after your interests. During my college accountant training, I was taught the concept of “Professional Skepticism” and not to believe anything I read without further examination. I’ve brought this skepticism with me while inspecting homes. I might not tell you what you want to hear, but I will tell you what you need to know.

My DYI Home Repair Projects

I have 40 years of experience in DIY home repairs. I started by stripping paint, sanding, and painting. I’ve evolved to installing new electric circuits to rooms and appliances and installing sub-panels by myself, work that impressed professional electricians. I’ve replaced over 15 windows in my childhood home in Scarsdale, NY, following TV, books, and website instructions. I’ve patched many holes in walls and ceilings with plaster and drywall. I’ve restored the wood molding to new. I’ve soldered copper plumbing pipes and installed new hot and cold PEX tubing, toilets, and faucets.

My Background

I’m educated, with a BS in accounting from SUNY Binghamton. I’m well-read, inquisitive, and personable, with a level of skepticism only age can bring. I am a technologist and self-learner with computer repair, appliance repair, and advanced-level self-taught automobile repair skills. I’ve pulled and rebuilt lawnmower engines, progressing to automobile engines. I do all but the heaviest repairs to my car. I’m self-taught in automobile electrical diagnosis and repair as well.

In Summary

I have a practiced eye when evaluating homes I visit, which I attribute to my 30+ years of DIY repairs. Many people told me, “You should be a home inspector.” I thought about it, researched it, and realized home inspection would fit me well. I’ve recognized leaning walls, cracks, leaky plumbing, sagging floors and roof lines, wet plaster, poorly installed drywall, bad wiring, and poor craftsmanship since I was a young teen helping my dad fix the family homestead in Scarsdale, NY. I’ve done handy-man repairs for many neighbor’s houses as well.

In Conclusion

As you can see, I’ve had many years of experience in both DIY repairs and in my prior field of computer networking and desktop support. This experience has made me a better home inspector and radon measurement specialist. I love learning new skills and have obtained many credentials. I’m currently a candidate for the Vice Presidency of my local NY-Metro American Society of Home Inspectors chapter (ASHI). If you hire me, you will gain my Home Inspection credentials and my ability to “problem solve” and look at things with an eye for detail. These skills will help me to catch some potential issues early on and also help steer you in the right direction for your new home. If you want a home inspection or radon measurement, please get in touch with me for a free consultation.

Why I Moved on, Changed Career Paths

After 30 years in computer networking and desktop support, I decided to move on. As a hobby, I’ve been repairing and renovating homes since junior high school. My skills evolved to the point where I gutted and renovated entire bathrooms for family members. The renovations included installing new technologies for hot and cold water piping, drain, waste, and vent lines from the roof to the basement. I’ve installed new windows for bedrooms and bathrooms. I framed the interior walls for pocket doors
and learned how to tile bathrooms myself. I researched how to install electric radiant heated floors and did it! It was a learn-as-you-go experience. I made mistakes but overcame them. My elderly mother and her cats appreciated the heated floor. I have included some photos of this work in the slide show area of this website. If you want to see more, contact me for more pictures and videos of these projects. They are available upon request.
